The Minefield of Self Employed Health Insurance

You would have thought that it wouldn’t be that difficult to get reasonably affordable self employed health insurance but unfortunately many self employed workers are finding that they are being priced out of the health insurance market.

For those who are employed and get health insurance as part of their overall employment package premiums and deductibles are better controlled through volume discounts and the strong negotiating position of major employers. However, with self employed health insurance there appears to be little incentive for health insurance providers to offer a fair deal.

An increasing number of self employed individuals are finding it almost impossible to find affordable health insurance and when they do it is more and more apparent that insurance providers are out for short term gain and are pricing self employed health insurance out of the market after the first year of insurance which is a period when it’s almost impossible to claim due to the pre-existing condition clause.

There have been numerous stories from self employed workers who have been totally ripped off with there self employed health insurance. Many people have been offered very affordable first year self employed health insurance premiums, with acceptable levels of deductibles, only to be faced with renewal offers (for the second and subsequent years) that make it impossible for them to renew.

With insurances such as auto insurance and homeowners insurance you can just say fine, no worries I’ll find another insurance provider but with self employed health insurance it’s a totally different matter. Health insurance isn’t something you can swap and change without significant risk.

For a start with every new policy there is usually a period in which you can’t make a claim and in addition:

·        You might develop a condition which could make you uninsurable.

·        Your age impacts on the cost of your premiums.

If you are looking for affordable self employed health insurance it is available but you need to ensure that you only use reputable self employed health insurance providers and don’t make your decision purely on the cost of first year premiums.

It’s a good idea to obtain a recommendation from other self employed individuals or those who don’t enjoy the benefits of health insurance provided through their employer.

Check out the benefits of joining a self employed association or an organisation associated with your line of work. Associations often negotiate deals with certain service providers including health insurance companies.

Finally, look at different types of self employed health insurance. If you currently have HMO coverage you could check out other options such as PPO which should prove more affordable and might meet your requirements.
